This drive can be used as a combined system and storage drive thanks to its fast 7200K rpm and enormous 3TB capacity. Recently prices for all large drives have been dropping and the 3TB Barracuda 7200.14 is currently a good choice in terms of both value for money and performance. Not only does the Barracuda have respectable sequential read/write speeds but it also goes head to head with the various green options, consuming a very reasonable 5.4W vs 5W (idle) on average for a "green" drive. That amounts to a tiny power consumption disadvantage and a lot more speed. Overall the Barracuda is priced aggressively and represents very good value for money. [Oct '12 HDrivePro]

40% failure rate. Cheap plastic parts that break, which damage the heads and pulverize the platters.

Drive died on me after not too long - no signs of failure... seems this is a common drive to die early after all my internet searches - no idea how it gets such high user ratings on here. Reliability and longevity need to play a higher part in the ratings.

Good

It will work fine if its the only drive in the chassis. However vibration will kill it.

good have to check reliability others say many doa i got one too and this is replacement many say best of these hdd last 2-2.5yr max or maybe even less than that is it true ?

Terrible

I've had 3/6 of these drives die on me. Stay clear of them.

Poor

I bought 3 of this model and 2 die or has failed SMART Status after 15 hours of use. I moved to Toshiba. Model ST3000DM001-1ER166 with Firmware CC25. And Seagate guarantee not good service to replace.. I quit of this brand.

very nice drive for the price, it even outperforms my 1tb caviar black

Terrible

With, after under four years of not so intensive use in a Synology DS413J NAS, a failure rate of 100% for the two Seagate ST3000DM001 drives I used in it , it is safe to say that this Barracuda series was a total disaster as is also seconded by many internet testimonials. So whether this drive was the fastest or not is totally irrelevant if it proves to be as unreliable as it is. Needles to say I think that I didn't replace them by other Seagate drives. The Hitachi 3TB drives I'm also using in the same NAS ran (an still run !) consistently cooler. Shame on you Seagate.

Very good

This is currently the best value large hard drive you can buy. It even beats the excellent Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000, primarily on price (by about 30%) but also on several benchmarks including sequential write speed. Seagate have really raised the bar by delivering phenomenal specs at a very reasonable price point. None of the competition even comes close.

Slow not worth the price... Especially you can get the Toshiba P300 3TB for less. Don't be stupid people.

August 2018: It's a pretty good drive. After 19,264 hours it's still going strong. For the ~$50 I payed for it, it's pretty good. It outlived a lot of other components in my system. UPDATE March 2020: It's still chugging along at 23,526 hours. I'm surprised it made it this far, and am just waiting for it to die now :P
